Why are lean tools not enough to transform healthcare delivery?

To truly become a lean organization, we need a new management system - and the "Strategy Deployment" (also known as hoshin kanri or policy deployment) method is a critical piece of lean management for Toyota, for other manufacturers, or for health systems like ThedaCare. Through this video experience, you will see ThedaCare's leading lean practices at their "gemba" and you will hear directly from a leading figure in the development of the ThedaCare Improvement System.

Join John Toussaint, M.D., CEO Emeritus of ThedaCare and CEO of the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value, for an interactive video learning experience. You and your team will be able to view two video sessions. The first is a recorded video featuring the Strategy Deployment process in use at ThedaCare, a community health system in Wisconsin that is a leader in the application of lean management in healthcare. The second is the recording of a live question and answer period with John Toussaint, M.D. where he answered questions about Strategy Deployment and the ThedaCare Improvement System.

John Toussaint, M.D., CEO of the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value
As the Center's founder and president, John Toussaint, MD, has the experience and passion to be a driving force in creating healthcare value. From 2000 to 2008, Dr. Toussaint served as president and chief executive officer of ThedaCare, Inc., a community-owned, four-hospital health system including twenty-one physician clinics, as well as home health capabilities, senior care facilities, hospice care, and behavioral health. About Healthcare Value Leaders:
The partnership between the Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) and the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value (TCHV) brings together two of the world's leaders in "lean thinking," with a combined 20 years of experience in lean implementation and education. Working in partnership allows LEI and the TCHV to leverage their unique perspectives and not-for-profit missions to accomplish a shared goal of fundamentally improving healthcare delivery through lean thinking..

LEI was founded by James P. Womack, noted management expert and leader of the MIT research team that coined the term "lean" through their study of the Toyota Production System. The ThedaCare Center, led by John Toussaint, M.D., was founded out of a desire to spread the innovative work done in the ThedaCare community health system. During Dr. Toussaint's tenure as CEO, from 2002 to 2008, ThedaCare began an organization-wide lean transformation effort that led to dramatic improvements in patient safety, quality, cost, waiting times, and employee morale.
